National Strandings Database
Stranding data from Italian coasts is being regularly collected on a national basis since 1986 by the Centro Studi Cetacei. The network managed the monitoring of Italian coasts and the study of the stranded and bycatched animals. Records of strandings collected by CSC have been published yearly by the Museum of Natural History of Milan (MSNM). In recent years other organizations began to be concerned with strandings and created their own local stranding network. To collect, verify and make available the information produced by the local organizations, by CSC and by other Institutions and local Authorities, the Italian Ministry of the Environment has signed a contract with CIBRA (University of Pavia) and the Museum in Milan to create and maintain a national database and GIS of strandings and to make it available online. The project is within the frame of the activities recommended by ACCOBAMS.
The project is in progress. The database is almost complete and all records are being validated by cross-checking with published data and with the original strandings forms. As soon as all data will be georeferenced and validated, the database will be published online (with restrictions).
Related to this project, the CIBRA-MSNM team collected information on strandings of Cuvier's beaked whales occurred on Mediterranean coasts in the last 120 years (Podestà et al., 2006). Updates have been illustrated at the workshop on Cuvier's beaked whales held within the ECS conference in San Sebastian (Spain) and will be included in the workshop's proceedings.
